Staying Time

by Katie Fitzgerald

The sound of stones
clinking together in my palm
tickles my ears.
Earlier the rain took us all by surprise,
cascading down the top of the porch.
Through the water I could see
trees, bearing green,
waving their arms.
I sit inside and count my blessings.
Finally I have found
a place unafraid,
the darkness made my friend.
I am feeling the sweetness
of my little face,
glance upturned slightly
like the corner of a leaf.
While quarantined at home,
the view from the glass door comes alive.
The grassy area, with birds hopping,
overlooks a river of cars below.
It is far enough away
for now.
Something wells up deep inside,
a feeling of being
and staying.
I wish I could stay forever.
